This article aims to present and discuss, from a conceptual and theoretical perspective, archae-ological and ethnohistorical information related to the most distinctive road infrastructure on South America's Qhapaq Nan: tampu, qurpa wasi, chaski wasi, and chuklla. Usually located near the Inca Road, these sites are a fundamental part of this Andean road system. Their specifications have been reconstructed from an essential theoretical field that is part of the sub-stantive theories on Tawantinsuyu knowledge. This article explores theoretical, archaeological, and interpretative aspects. It highlights the marked influence of historical contributions on understanding this type of site and the consequent archaeological application. Researchers also present theoretical and archaeological considerations regarding the issue.
